Chris Rock to Host the 88th Academy Awards in Late February 2016
It's official. The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences has announced that Chris Rock will return to host the 88th Academy Awards coming up in late February next year. This will be the second time that Rock hosts the Oscars, as he first hosted them back in 2005 (when Million Dollar Baby won). He has not been nominated yet, but Rock returns as a successful filmmaker this time, having made the films I Think I Love My Wife and Top Five since last hosting. "Chris Rock is truly the MVP of the entertainment industry," said producers David Hill & Reginald Hudlin. "Comedian, actor, writer, producer, director, documentarian – he's done it all. He's going to be a phenomenal Oscar host!" And he's funny. Bring on the Oscar season.
The Academy's announcement comes with a whole host of praise and appreciation for Chris Rock:
“I'm so glad to be hosting the Oscars,” said Rock. “It's great to be back.”
“We share David and Reggie’s excitement in welcoming Chris, whose comedic voice has really defined a generation,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “He is certain to bring his amazing array of talents to this year’s show.”
“Chris may be best known as a stand-up comic, but we think of him as a creative innovator in many other ways. He is unafraid in his artistry,” said Academy CEO Dawn Hudson. “We couldn’t be happier to welcome him back to the Oscars.”
"Chris Rock is a comedic powerhouse who will bring tremendous energy to the event, and we’re honored to have him,” said Paul Lee, President ABC Entertainment Group.
Last year, the Oscars were hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, and Ellen DeGeneres the year before that. I like this choice and I think Chris Rock will bring some good vibes to the Academy Awards show, since it seems to be always changing and never perfect. Did you see Top Five? If not, start with that, it's pretty dang good and a strong reminder that Chris Rock is a very funny guy. The 88th Oscars will be held on Sunday, February 28th, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre at Hollywood & Highland Center in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries and territories worldwide. Nominations will be announced on January 14th, 2016.
